01 fev 2019 Health benefits of beer
It’s friday, a great day to talk about beer! Find out more about the benefits of moderate consumption and how this beverage is totally associated with biotechnology.
Benefits of beer
Scientists at the University of Barcelona say that the balanced intake of beer, with or without alcohol, can bring a number of health benefits such as prevention of cardiovascular and respiratory problems, nutrition, prevention of cellular aging and stroke risk reduction. According to researchers, this is due to folic acid, vitamins, iron and calcium, in addition to more than 50 types of polyphenols (micronutrients that act as antioxidants) in beer.
According to Rosa Lamuela, PHD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Barcelona, the polyphenols present in the beverage can cause beneficial effects on blood pressure or insulin resistance and, consequently, aid in the fight against diabetes.
To support the beer market and ensure a better quality in the brewing process, the Laboratório da Cerveja, one of the startups funded and developed by BiotechTown, offers technical and scientific support to craft breweries.
About Laboratório da Cerveja
The startup performs sensorial and microbiological analysis of the various stages of beer production, including end product, bottled or draft beers, as well as the raw materials, to detect possible problems associated with contamination.
According to Luciana Brandão and Beatriz Borelli, the co-founders, some bacteria and yeasts can decrease product quality and make it sensorially unpleasant to the consumer’s taste.
Luciana states that “Acetobacter and Gluconobacter are genera of bacteria that give vinegar aroma to beer, while the genera Lactobacillus and Pediococcus promote, respectively, acidity and a buttery flavor in the drink. These spoilage microorganisms alter the quality of the product and can cause economic losses and damage consumer confidence”.
The company also offers yeast management through the storage, maintenance and propagation of this important ingredient of the production process.
Currently the startup is developing Brazilian yeasts for the production of special beers, helping to reduce dependence on imported lineages and further regionalize the product. This type of specialized service and associated products are still scarce in the market. Included in its portfolio, the company also offers courses associated with the brewing process.
With the quality assured by the startup, beer connoisseurs can enjoy even more of the benefits of drinking while continuing to combine their moderate consumption with regular exercise and a balanced diet.
